Why Content Marketing Is Better Than Social Media Marketing
There’s been a big push with marketing on social media over the last few years, and although social media can be beneficial, it should not be used solely to grow your business.
Social media marketing is great as an accent, kind of like a great piece of jewelry is to an outfit. But it can NOT stand alone and exclusively grow your business long term.
The most POWERFUL way to build your business is with content you create on your website. One, you own the content and two, you can market it how you see fit.
When you think about content marketing, you might think it’s an old school method. It is not. Content is king and will forever help you grow your business, especially when it’s on your website!
Let’s take a closer look at this.
Content Is King
Back in 2011 when I started my first online business, you’d often hear “Content Is King.”
Creating great content was the key to getting discovered organically through search engines and although a lot has changed throughout the past decade, content is still king and can grow your business like nothing else out there…including social media.
So why is content so important? Building content is having a conversation with your audience and it’s building relationships. Without relationship building, there is no sales. Relationships are fundamentally the most important part of your business.
What’s troubling is there has been a recent trend where companies aren’t even building websites for their businesses and believe that you no longer need one to run an online business successfully, especially if you’re a knowledge based business.
This is a big mistake, let’s take a look at how a website is crucial for growth.
The Life Of Content On Social Media
Social media is great to use in addition to content on your website. But when it is used as the only place to have your content, that is when it becomes problematic.
Content on social media has a very short lifespan. When you post new content, you initially get a hit of traffic within the first hour of posting. The second hour, your traffic begins to dramatically decline and each hour thereafter gets smaller and smaller.
This leaves you in a vicious cycle of having to constantly be posting to social media and that will inevitably burn you out.
Once you realize that the life of content on social platforms essentially is only a few hours, you start to look for other ways to make your content last longer. And if the content goes viral, that too has a short lifespan when looking at the bigger picture.
That’s not to say that you can’t use social media to “help” grow your business…we will get to that in a second.
The Life Of Content On A Website
So now let’s take a look at content marketing on your website. It has the reverse effect of social media marketing.
At first you have very little traffic, and that can be discouraging. But if you are consistent your content will start to work for you and will become evergreen material on search engines and that will consistently bring leads to your business for years to come.
I still have posts that I’ve written over 12 years ago that I get traffic from. Your content can last a LONG time on search engines making search engines ridiculously powerful for your business.
The perfect marriage is to use content marketing and social media marketing in conjunction with one another. Let me show you what that looks like.
A Hybrid Of Content Marketing & Social Media Marketing
You can use a hybrid of content marketing and social media marketing to grow your business. This will create trust and help you get organic leads. Here’s what that would look like:
You create content on your website which will help you rank within google and will provide organic leads in time. In addition, content is like having an open conversation with your followers. It’s building relationships.
Get eyes on your content by repurposing content that you wrote on your website to social media. You can promote your content on all different social channels with a link back to your website.
In addition, you can build relationships with your followers by posting regularly not only on your website but also on social media. Instagram stories is a perfect example of a platform that allows your followers into your world which helps build trust.
When you use your content created on your website and cross post it onto your social platforms, some of these social platforms act as second search engines (Pinterest, YouTube etc.) and this helps you grow within search engines. This helps you to get organic leads that you can use to market to in the future.
Content Marketing Is The Secret Sauce To ANY Online Business
Content marketing is the secret sauce to explode the growth of your online business. It might take a bit longer to create the content, but the rewards are well worth your efforts.
Just think of it as a way to stay relevant with your readers, grow your business within search engines, and carry on conversations with your readers that builds trust.
There isn’t another platform that allows you to have so much control.
And remember, you don’t want to give control to social media platforms to grow your business…that’s a recipe for disaster. You want full control of your business, and your website is THE platform that gives you full control of YOUR business.
